Waterman Boreham Renewable Power Generation

Waterman Boreham has developed an enviable reputation within the field of wind farm development, particularly in overcoming the difficulties associated with restricted access sites.

Transporting wind turbines requires abnormal loads and it is not unusual for these to be several times larger than those permitted by law. Furthermore, wind farms are usually located in rural environments where access is far from ideal.

This can create substantial problems for developers when trying to achieve planning permission.

Boreham’s expertise enables clients to unlock rural sites, which would otherwise remain unusable, by demonstrating measures which will facilitate access for abnormal vehicles, both for construction and future maintenance of the turbines.

By focusing on the identification of the most appropriate delivery routes, we negotiate agreement with the highway authority regarding local highway constraints. The measures employed to overcome constraints generally involve a combination of environmentally sensitive physical highway improvements combined with traffic management and control measures.

Experience

Boreham’s services have been employed to unlock wind farm development sites throughout the UK and Ireland for clients such as Renewable Energy Systems UK and Ireland, Nuon Renewables and EnergieKontor.

Background

Renewable energy generation forms a key aspect of the Government’s philosophy and policy for addressing society’s carbon footprint and the resultant implications for our environment. The 2003 Energy White Paper identified a strategy for increasing the proportion of power generated within the UK by renewable means and this was further strengthened in the recent 2007 Energy White Paper. The Government’s Renewables Obligation of 2002 undertook to ensure that renewable means of energy generation could compete on a ‘level playing field’ with more traditional, but less environmentally-acceptable forms of power generation, despite currently higher lifetime operational costs (including construction).

The Government’s strategy for implementing renewable energy generation includes targets of achieving 10% of all electricity generated in the UK by renewable means by the year 2010 and 20% by 2020.
